Fall Baseball Begins on Monday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss baseball team will begin its official fall workouts starting on Monday, Sept. 27, at 2:30 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The Golden Eagles will practice Monday through Friday for the next four weeks, and will scrimmage each Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The practices will last throughout the month of October, ending with the annual Black-Gold game on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. The scrimmages are open to the public.
"I?m anxious and ready for the start of another year of baseball," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "We have added a few new faces that I believe will help fill the holes left by graduation and the draft. Going into the fall, our top priority is to find replacements in the middle infield and to develop starters and bullpen pitchers to complete our staff. We are looking forward to having good competition among the players that hopefully will lead to their development as they get ready for the spring season. The coaching staff is ready to get started so we can see the ability of the players."
The Golden Eagles return 14 letterwinners, including four starting position players and two starting pitchers, and six bullpen pitchers from last year?s squad that finished 45-19 overall and tied for second-place in Conference USA, advanced to the Conference USA Tournament championship game and also to its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Golden Eagles have produced a 92-35 record over the past two seasons for a 72.4 winning percentage, 10th best winning percentage in the nation during that time.
