Lady Eagle Basketball Releases ?04-?05 Schedule
Joye Lee-McNelis |
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss Head Women?s Basketball Coach Joye Lee-McNelis today released the 2004-05 schedule that will feature one Final Four team (LSU), six other NCAA Tournament teams (Austin Peay, DePaul, Houston, Marquette, TCU, Virginia Tech), and six others (Charlotte, Cincinnati, Louisville, Memphis, South Alabama, USF) who made WNIT appearances.
The schedule also will feature the usual 14 Conference USA games and other non-conference games against Arkansas-Little Rock, future C-USA opponent UCF, Louisiana-Monroe, Southern Illinois, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Southeastern Louisiana and UNO. Southern Miss also will host its own Lady Eagle Classic for the 12th-straight year.
"Our schedule will be very challenging this season, particularly due to our opening the season against a Final Four team in LSU and having another NCAA participant, Austin Peay, in our tournament," Lee-McNelis said. "Overall, our schedule has 12 teams that advanced to postseason play. Our non-conference schedule should prepare us for an intense season in Conference USA."
The Lady Eagles open the season with a Nov. 16 exhibition game against the Thavine All-Stars. Final Four participant LSU provides regular-season-opening opposition, Nov. 21, in Houma, La. Southern Miss hosts its own Lady Eagle Classic, Dec. 3-4, and will open C-USA play, Jan. 7, with TCU.
Southern Miss' home C-USA schedule will include games against TCU, Houston, Marquette, DePaul, Tulane, USF and UAB. The Lady Eagles will travel to Saint Louis, Memphis, East Carolina, Charlotte, Louisville, Cincinnati and Tulane. The Jan. 30 Charlotte game will be televised on the C-USA Network.
"Conference USA is loaded from top to bottom this season," Lee-McNelis said. "Last year was a good indicator of the level of talent in this league because of so many younger players being named to the all-conference teams. League play this season will be very tough, because we had nine teams advance to the postseason last year."
The conference tournament this season will be played Mar. 3-7, in Charlotte, N.C.
The complete schedule includes:
Nov. 16, Thavine All-Stars (exhibition); 21, LSU (Houma, La.); 23, Arkansas-Little Rock; 26, at UCF;
Dec. 3-4, Lady Eagle Classic (American University, Austin Peay, Columbia); 7, at Louisiana-Monroe; 11, Southern Illinois; 19, at South Alabama; 28-29, at Virginia Tech Classic (Davidson, North Carolina A&T, Virginia Tech);
