Baseball Announces Fourth Signee Of Spring Period
Corky Palmer |
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ?
Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Matt Caire, a 6-0, 210-pound left-handed pitcher from Delgado Community College in New Orleans, La., to a letter of intent for the 2004-05 academic year. This marks the fourth signee of the spring period and the 11th signee overall for the year, including the early signing period.
"I'm pleased Matt has decided to attend Southern Miss," Palmer said. "The coaching staff has been working hard this year on building pitching depth, and Matthew is the third left-hander we have signed. He will be used next season as a spot starter or in relief. He has good command of his pitches and throws three pitches for strikes (fastball, curve and changeup)."
Caire, who hails from Luling, La., was a two-year starter at Delgado CC for Coach Joe Scheuermann. As a sophomore this past season, he finished with a 3-2 record and a 2.57 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched and struck out 56 batters. He helped lead Delgado to a 34-18 record and an appearance in the NJCAA Region 23 Championship Game. As a freshman, he posted a 5-2 record.
Caire was a four-year letterwinner for Coach Mark Sims at Hahnville High School in Hahnville, La. He finished with a 9-2 record and a 2.30 ERA as a senior in 76.1 innings pitched and struck out 78 batters. He was a three-time all-district selection, two-time All-River Parish and was named All-Metro and All-State as a senior.
