UNO downs Southern Miss Baseball, 4-1
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? UNO used single runs in the fifth and eighth innings and two runs in the sixth as they defeated Southern Miss, 4-1, Tuesday, before 2,480 at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
With the win, UNO improves to 23-21 on the year, while Southern Miss drops to 33-13 on the season.
UNO?s Matt Crockett (4-3) got the win, pitching seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing one run, while striking out five and walking one.
Nick Valluzzo made his first start as a Golden Eagle and got a no-decision, pitching 4.1 innings, scattering three hits and one run, while striking two and walking four. Mike Cashion (2-2) took the loss for Southern Miss, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, while walking one. Adam Smith pitched 0.1 innings, while striking out one. Ray Antonneli pitched two innings, scattering two hits and one run, while striking out three and walking one. Noah Tritz pitched the ninth, striking out one.
?I?m very disappointed,? Southern Miss Head Baseball Corky Palmer said. ?We?re not doing the things we were doing early in the season.
The game was scoreless until the fifth.
UNO?s Tony Gonzalez led off the fifth with a double to the centerfield wall and he stole third base. An RBI single from Justin Guy scored Gonzalez and gave the Privateers a 1-0 lead. After Cashion was brought on in relief, Ryan Meyer hit the first pitch he saw back to Cashion for the second out of the inning. Cashion then got Kody Valverde to ground out which ended the inning.
Southern Miss responded in the bottom of the fifth.
After Crockett got Carlos Velasquez to pop-out and a groundout by Ryan Frith, Jody Blount doubled to the left-field wall. Jason Lowery knocked him home with an RBI single to center, tying the game at 1-1.
UNO responded with two runs in the sixth.
Following a Dana Tosoni groundout to start the inning, Mike Forbes singled and Jay Yaconetti walked. Gonzalez knocked an RBI groundout that scored Forbes and Guy followed with a RBI single that scored Yaconetti, giving the Privateers a 3-1 advantage. Forbes? solo home run off Ray Antonnelli in the eighth made the score 4-1.
