Lady Eagle Netters Drop Opening Match at Conference USA Tourney

- The Southern Miss women?s tennis lost its opening match at the Conference USA Tournament, losing to six-seeded Marquette, 4-1, at Seneca Park.

Marquette took a 1-0 lead after winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.  Nicola Slater and Kathi Sadofsky lost a tough match at No. 1, 9-7, to Veronica Briseno and Callen Smith (MAR), while Olivia Berry and Courtney Ulrich dropped their match to Francina Bonnelly and Eva Trujillo (MAR), 8-4.

After losing the doubles point, the Lady Eagles fought back claiming their only point came at No. 1 singles when Slater defeated Briseno (MAR), 6-4, 7-5.  Marquette (4-16) claimed victories at No. 2, 4 and 5 singles with Bonnelly sealing the win with a 7-5, 7-6 decision over Berry at No. 5.

Southern Miss (9-11) will meet Cincinnati in a consolation round at 9 a.m. at Seneca Park.
