Baseball Hosts Mississippi Valley State On Wednesday

The Golden Eagles will send sophomore righthander Daniel Best to the mound, while MVSU?s possible starter is senior lefthander Chad Williams.
Best enters with a 1-2 record and a 5.70 ERA. He has pitched 23.2 innings, gave up 15 earned runs on 28 hits, struck out 17 and walked four. Opponents are hitting .292 against him. In his outing against Ole Miss last Tuesday, he gave up three runs, two earned, on nine hits and struck out four in 6.2 innings.
Williams comes in with a 3-2 record with a 1.82 ERA. He has given up six earned runs on 18 hits in 29.2 innings pitched, has struck out 35 and walked 10. Opponents have hit .168 against him thus far. Southern Miss has a team ERA of 3.43 and opponents have hit .253 against them.
Conference USA Hitter of the Week Jarrett Hoffpauir leads the Southern Miss offense. The junior second baseman is hitting .456 with five home runs and 41 RBIs. He has a slugging percentage of .699 and an on-base percentage of .479. Hoffpauir has made only one error in 129 chances. Junior shortstop and co-captain Matt Shepherd is second on the team in batting with a .436 average. He also has eight doubles, a team-best five triples and 13 RBIs. He has a slugging percentage of .614 and an on-base percentage of .512.
Junior first baseman Marc Maddox is third on the team in batting (.415), including six doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 34 RBIs. Senior rightfielder Ryan Frith is fourth on the team in batting (.400), including six doubles, a team-leading nine home runs and 26 RBIs. He also leads the team in slugging percentage (.767). The Golden Eagles are hitting .331 as a team with 49 doubles, 10 triples, 31 home runs and 187 RBIs.
