Lady Golden Eagle Netters Drop Two Matches

Nicola Slater continues to roll for the Lady Eagles, winning both matches to remain unbeated in dual match play

GULFPORT, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team had its three-match winning streak snapped, losing both matches in the Lady Eagle Classic at the Bayou Bluff Tennis Club.

Southern Miss lost to Georgia Southern, 6-1, after the match was suspended on Sunday because of rain, and then lost to Murray State, 6-1, in an afternoon match.

Georgia Southern won the doubles? point, winning two of the three doubles.  The Golden Eagles got a win at No. 3 doubles when Olivia Berry and Courtney Ulrich defeated Charlotte Bruneteaux and Kim Wollett, 8-4.

The Lady Eagles lone point came at No. 1 singles with Nicola Slater defeating Ciara Finucane in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Against Murray State (5-3), the Racers swept the doubles competition to win the doubles? point to take the 1-0 lead.  The Racers dominated singles? play, winning five of the single?s matches in straight sets.

Southern Miss earned its only point at No. 1 singles when Nicola Slater came back from a set down to defeat Melissa Spencer, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 (super tiebreaker).

?We didn?t play bad in either match today,? Head Coach Randy Rowley said.  ?I believed we learned something from each match, because I thought we played well at times.  Both teams were good, and we were able to compete with them.  Murray State won their conference last season and I believe they will win it again this year.?

Murray State finished the tournament with a 3-0 record, followed by Georgia Southern at 2-1, Southern Miss 1-2 and Centenary 0-3.

Southern Miss, now 5-4, returns to action in Hattiesburg on Tuesday, when the Lady Eagles host Alcorn State at 2 p.m., at Tatum Park.
