Southern Miss won the doubles points, posting wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Grace Kammerer and Jennifer Sibille defeated Christine Majchrowicz and Elizabeth Pitts (CC), 8-2. Nicola Slater and Courtney Ulrich downed Anja Schmidt and Heather Kelley (CC), 9-7. Southern Miss won the No.3 doubles by default.
"This was a great way to start the tournament,? Head Coach Randy Rowley said. ?This was a nice win. All of the players stepped up and played well. We were not looking beyond this match and we took care of the match like we were suppose to. Nicola Slater had a huge win against a nationally ranked player. This just shows how hard we are working to get the program on track.?
Southern Miss started the singles with a win at No. 6 singles with a default. Olivia Berry added a point for the Lady Eagles with a straight-set win at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Sarah Myers. Kammerer clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles over Elizabeth Myers. Kathi Sadofsky defeated Kelley, 6-3, 6-0.
Nicola Slater defeated the No. 90-ranked player, Anja Schmidt (CC), in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Nikhila Narra completed the sweep, defeating Majchrowicz, 6-2, 6-3.
