Shepherd Named Conference USA Co-Hitter of the Week

Southern Miss junior shortstop Matt Shepherd has been named the Conference USA Co-Hitter of the Week for the week ending Feb. 22. The Golden Eagles finished with a 3-0 record for the week after sweeping Northwestern (La.) State.As the Golden Eagles' leadoff hitter, Shepherd hit .727 (8/11) for the week, including two doubles, a triple, two stolen bases and had two RBIs and scored eight runs. He had an on-base percentage of .813, a slugging percentage of 1.091 and a fielding percentage of .917 (1 PO/10A/1E).
In game one, he went 3-for-5, scored two runs, had a triple and a double in his first two at bats and had a walk. In the second game, he was 2-for-3, scored three runs, had a double, a walk, a stolen base and drove in a run. In game three, he was a perfect 3-for-3, scored three runs, two walks and stole a base.
UAB senior outfielder Sam Clark was also named co-hitter of the week with Shepherd. Clark batted .500 (7-for-14) with six runs scored and a team-leading eight RBIs during a 4-0 week. He had a double, two home runs and stole three bases, while walking three times. Clark had three multiple hit games and had three games with two or more RBI.
USF freshman pitcher Chase Lirette picked up two victories last week, both over Jacksonville, earning a win as a starter on Tuesday and in relief on Sunday. In 9.0 innings pitched on the week, he allowed three runs on seven hits, while striking out 13 and walking three. In four innings of relief in Sunday's 5-4 win, he fanned nine, including the final three batters he faced to end the game.
The Golden Eagles host South Alabama on Tuesday at 3 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field and then travel to New Orleans for a Wednesday game at 6:30 p.m., at Privateer Park.
