Basketball Set To Face Regional Foe South Alabama
MOBILE, Ala. -- Fresh off its big 88-84 overtime victory over LSU, Southern Miss travels to Mobile, Ala., to face regional rival the University of South Alabama in the sixth annual Coors Classic, the men's basketball tournament associated with the GMAC Bowl.
The Golden Eagles, under the direction of Head Coach Larry Eustachy, enter the game with a 7-2 record overall record, the best mark through nine games since the 2000-01 season. The Jaguars come into the game following a 83-52 loss on the road against Florida State, dropping the team to 3-5 on the season.
Against LSU, Jasper Johnson had his second-straight double-double with a career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds against LSU, while Jarekus Singleton also posted a career-mark with 23 points in the win. Johnson continues to lead the team with 18.2 points a game and 7.3 rebounds an outing, while Jarekus Singleton is second with 13.0 points a game. Rashaad Carruth remains third with 10.1 points a game.
The Jaguars, under the direction of third-year coach John Pelphrey, are led by Mario Jointer's 16.4 points-per-game average. Jeffrey Collins follows with 8.4 points per game, while Richard Law is averaging 8.0 points an outing. Jointer also leads the team with 5.3 rebounds a game, while Stephen Cowherd is tops with 16 assists on the season.
The game will be televised by Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS), with Matt Stewart and former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins calling the action. Game time is set for 8:30 p.m. Check your local listings for channel and program information.
The contest will be broadcast over the Southern Miss/ISP Sports Network. "The Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox and Lance Pittman will call the action. Air time begins at 8 p.m., CT, with the Golden Eagle Courtside Show.
Following the contest, the Golden Eagles take a break from game action for the holiday season. The team returns when it hosts crosstown foe William Carey, Dec. 28, at Reed Green Coliseum.
