Ezell Named Preseason All-American
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America has announced that Southern Miss sophomore pitcher Patrick Ezell has been named a third-team preseason All-American on its sixth annual preseason All-America college baseball team as voted upon by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
In 2004, Ezell finished with a 6-2 record and a team-low 3.57 ERA among Golden Eagle starting pitchers. He pitched in a team-high 90.2 innings, struck out a team-high 73 batters and walked a team-low 14 batters among starting pitchers. Ezell pitched one complete game, combined with Austin Tubb for a shutout and opponents hit .281 against him. He pitched a season-high eight innings against Eastern Illinois (3/14) and TCU (4/4) and finished with a season-high 10 strikeouts against Eastern Illinois. Ezell earned Freshman All-American honors in 2004 from Collegiate Baseball.
Southern Miss returns four position starters, two starting pitchers and 14 letterwinners from last year's squad that finished 45-19, tied for second place in league play, advanced to the conference tournament championship game and advanced to the NCAA regional tournament for the second-straight year. The Golden Eagles open their season against future Conference USA member Marshall, on Friday, Feb. 18, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 3 p.m.
