Baseball Announces Fifth Signee Of Early Signing Period
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ?
Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Jeremy Davis, a 5-11, 180-pound outfielder from Cathedral High School in Natchez, Miss., to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2005-06 academic year. This marks the fifth signee of the early signing period."Jeremy is an excellent outfielder who can hit for power from the right side," Palmer said. "He can hit for average or power and is a good athlete. If he continues to work hard, he will have a chance to compete for playing time right away."
As junior last season, Davis hit .416 with seven doubles, two triples, 12 home runs and drove in 48 runs. He finished with 19 walks, 84 total bases, a slugging percentage of .944 and a .536 on-base percentage. He helped lead Cathedral to the Class 1-A State Championship in 2004.
As a freshman, he was a second-team All-State team member by the Mississippi Association of Coaches and was a first-team selection his sophomore and junior seasons. He is a three-time all-district selection and was named All-Metro by The Natchez Democrat three times.
He had the highest batting average among the starters at Cathedral High School and tied for the most runs on the team (45), won the offensive award, had the highest number of RBIs, the highest slugging percentage and broke the single-season home run record.
Davis also lettered in basketball and football once and was a two-year selection to Who's Who Among High School Students, National Honor Society and the National Honor Roll. He also participated in the Mississippi Math and Science Tournament for two years.
The Golden Eagles other signees are Luke Adkins (OF/5-9/165/Nettleton HS/Nettleton, Miss.), Bailey Hartel (SS/5-10/170/Pearl River CC), Wayne Smith (LHP/5-10/180/Oak Grove HS) and Keith Winstead (C/6-3/195/Pearl River CC).
Southern Miss returns four position starters, two starting pitchers and 14 letterwinners from last year's squad that finished 45-19, tied for second place in league play, advanced to the conference tournament championship game and advanced to the NCAA regional tournament for the second-straight year. The Golden Eagles open their season against future Conference USA member Marshall, on Friday, Feb. 18, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 3 p.m.
