Lady Eagles Competing at the Wilson/ITA South Regional
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? The Southern Miss Lady Eagle tennis team opened play at the 2004 Wilson/ITA South Regional Championships on the campus of the University of Alabama.
Nicola Slater posted a 1-1 record in the singles Draw A, defeating Carlin Cochran of Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-1. She lost to the No. 8 seed Ashley Bentley of Alabama, 6-4, 6-4.
In singles Draw B, Nikhila Narra defeated Sonja Nikolic of Alabama, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, but lost to Sarah Sabin of Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-3. Grace Kammerer lost to Linda Johannsson of Belmont, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. Newcomer Ali Blackett defeated Christina Mancheno of Troy, 6-2, 6-1. She will meet the No. 4 seed Dominica Nemcovicova of South Alabama in the quarterfinals.
Jennifer Sibille lost to Zeynep Gurkaynak of Jacksonville State, 6-3, 6-2. Kim Lennartsson defeated Nicole Shaw of Troy, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, and the No. 5 seed Klara Jarova of South Alabama, 6-2, 6-3. Lennartsson will play Natalie Tirapelli of Florida State in the quarterfinals.
In doubles competition, Nicola Slater and Ali Blackett lost to Egle Petrauskaite and Desanka Jovanovic of Florida International, 8-6. Nikhila Narra and Grace Kammerer received a first round bye and will play Zeynep Gurkaynak and Robin Gorman of Jacksonville State. Sibille and Lennartsson lost to Sonja Nikolic of Alabama and Luisa Obando of USF.
