Southern Miss Soccer Wins Season Opener In Overtime
New Orleans, La.- Freshman Carly Barkley scored the game-winning goal in overtime and junior goalkeeper Anna Snyder recorded four saves as the Lady Eagle soccer team opened the 2003 regular-season with a 2-1 win over Nicholls State at the Tulane Invitational Tournament Friday evening in New Orleans, La.
The Lady Eagles (1-0) opened up the scoring in the first half with a 25-yard blast from junior Kay Beth Costilow in the 24th minute of play. The defense added support in the first half by holding Nicholls State to only one shot.
Nicholls State (0-1) retaliated in the second half with an Amy Authement header, assisted by a corner-kick from Samantha Bledsoe in the 58th minute of play.
That set up Barkley?s game-winner when she angled a shot from the right wing into the net to give Southern Miss the overtime victory.
?We definitely did not bring our ?A game? tonight, but the sign of a good team is when you play poorly and pull out a win,? Clark said.
The Lady Eagles return to action, Sunday, August 31, against Texas State at the Tulane Invitational Tournament.
