Governor Musgrove Honors
Golden Eagle Baseball Team
Jackson, Miss. - Governor Ronnie Musgrove has proclaimed July 9, 2003, as "USM Golden Eagles Baseball Day" in honor of their extraordinary accomplishments this season. The Southern Miss baseball team finished the season with a 47-16 record and hosted the school's first NCAA Baseball Regional Tournament.
"I extend my congratulations to the 2003 Golden Eagles baseball team on their extraordinary accomplishments this season," said Musgrove. "The team and coaches represented their school, community and state with honor and dignity."
The Golden Eagles finished 23-7 in Conference USA and won the program's first regular-season championship, along with the league's tournament championship. The team was ranked in the national Top 25 for 12-straight polls and ranked 18th in the final USA Today Baseball Weekly Coaches Poll. For the first time in the program's history, three Golden Eagle players were drafted in the top five rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft.
In addition, Head Coach Corky Palmer was named the Conference USA/Keith LeClair Coach of the Year, and his team set numerous team and league records during the course of the season.
