Nix To Undergo Kidney Transplant Surgery On Friday
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Former Southern Miss standout running back Derrick Nix will undergo kidney transplant surgery on Fri., June 6, at the UAB Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala., at 10 a.m. Nix's older brother, Marcus, is making the kidney donation to his younger brother.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers and gifts that donations be made to the Student-Athlete Medical Fund in the name of Derrick Nix. Send donations to the Student-Athlete Medical Fund, Southern Miss Athletics Foundation, P.O. Box 15458, Hattiesburg, MS 39404.
Nix ran for 1,194 yards and scored 11 touchdowns as a senior in 2002 and was the first Southern Miss player to run for 1,000 or more yards in three different seasons. He had a season-high 201 yards against Illinois on Sept. 7, and followed that with 196 yards against Memphis on Sept. 14. He was named first-team All-Conference USA.
Nix rushed for 3,584 yards over his four-year career, scored 30 touchdowns and ran for 100 yards or more 14 times, finishing second on the Southern Miss charts in rushing yards and touchdowns and third in rushing touchdowns. He also was second in Conference USA history for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
