Baseball Announces Fifth Signee of Spring Period
Hattiesburg, Miss. -Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Drew Carson, a 6-1, 185-pound outfielder from Neville High School in Monroe, La., to a national letter of intent for the 2003-04 academic year.
"I am happy that Drew has decided to attend Southern Miss," Palmer said. "He comes from an outstanding high school program and has been well coached. He is a good athlete with a good arm and hits for power. If he continues to work hard and learn the college game, he will have a bright future ahead of him."
Carson, a three-year letterwinner as an outfielder, pitcher and third baseman for Coach Robert Bratton, is hitting .415 with 51 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, six home runs, 21 stolen bases and 35 RBIs as a senior. As a pitcher, he has a 9-0 record with a 2.05 ERA as a senior and had a 10-0 record as a junior. Carson was a three-time All-Northeast Louisiana selection, three-time all-district performer and a three-time all-state honoree.
Carson was a member to two Dixie Majors All-Star teams, finishing in first place in 2002 and second in the 2000 World Series. In 2002, he hit .556 with nine RBIs and had an on-base percentage of .692.
He also lettered four years in football as a cornerback, wide receiver and punter. He was a two-time all-district punter and all-Northeast punter. He was a member of the Renaissance Academic Club, named to the Who's Who Among High School Students and was awarded first place in the Monroe City Schools Talented Art Show in 2001.
This marks the fifth signee of the spring signing period and eighth overall. The Golden Eagles signed Mike Cashion (RHP/Clinton, Miss./Clinton, Miss.), Christopher Matesich (SS/Germantown, Tenn/Germantown HS), Brett Hoeflich (1B-OF/Petal HS/Petal, Miss.) and Trey Cuevas (C/Oak Grove HS/Oak Grove, Miss.) during the spring signing period, and Barry Bowden (RHP/Vidalia HS/Vidalia, La.), Patrick Ezell (P/Petal HS/Petal, Miss.) and Nathan Sanders (OF/Meridian CC/Meridian, Miss.) in the fall signing period.
Southern Miss is currently 36-13 overall and 18-6 in Conference USA action, good enough for first place in the standings.
