Baseball Makes Jump In Polls
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team moved up six spots from No. 23 to No. 17 in The Sports Weekly/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' poll and moved up five spots from No. 24 to No. 19 in Collegiate Baseball's poll.
Southern Miss (45-14) captured its first Conference USA Tournament championship this past week by defeating Charlotte, 13-0, on Wednesday, Houston, 7-2, on Thursday, East Carolina 3-1 on Saturday and Tulane 7-5 for the championship on Sunday. The Golden Eagles won the regular season championship in Houston on the weekend of May 15-17.
Last week the Golden Eagles moved up to No. 15 in Baseball America, marking the highest the Golden Eagles have ever been ranked in baseball. They moved up from 17th from the week before, marking the highest baseball ranking in the school's history at that point.
Conference USA member Tulane is ranked No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 23 in Collegiate Baseball's poll.
Southern Miss, the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional, will host No. 3-seed Southern University (45-5), No. 29, on Friday, May 30, at 3 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park. No. 1 seed Baylor (41-21), No. 15 in The Sports Weekly/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' poll and No. 21 in Collegiate Baseball's poll, will host Murray State (25-29) in the 7 p.m., game. Game times for Saturday's contests are 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m., and the championship game will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m.
