Lady Eagle Golfers Lead After One Round
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Lady Eagle golf team found a way to beat everything but the weather Monday on the opening day of the 11th annual Lady Eagle Classic being played at Shadow Ridge Golf Course here.
While Head Coach Julie Gallup's team was shooting a single-round, team-record 295 in the tournament's opening round, the weather came into play late in the first round and forced the 12 teams off the course midway through today's second round. Players marked their positions and, weather permitting, will resume play Tuesday morning at 8:30.
"Because of travel constraints, we will not try to finish the second round and then play a third round tomorrow," Gallup said. "Most of the player were midway through their second rounds, so we should be able to finish that round easily tomorrow."
Gallup also was pleased with the way her Lady Eagles played. "This was the first time we've broken 300 as a team in a round," she said. " I thought we played really well, and that's especially true of Jennifer Keefe (35-36--71) was one-under-par after the first round and another stroke under on her second round. With the exception of the weather, I think all the teams have really enjoyed themselves. It has been a good event, and Shadow Ridge has gone out of the way to help insure the tournament's success."
In addition to Keefe, three other Southern Miss players make up the top four after one round. Natasha Vincent recorded a 37-37--74, Ofelia Lopez a 40-35--75, and Brena Quaranto a 38-37--75. Keefe's 71 was the only subpar score of the first round.
Southern Miss' team is 16 strokes better than Middle Tennessee State (311) and 17 strokes better than East Tennessee State. Samford (312) and Troy State (320) complete the top five. East Tennessee State's Kailey Brooks (39-37--76), Samford's Kelly Villarreal (40-36--76), South Alabama's Angela Villa (37-39--76), Middle Tennessee State's Tamara Munsch (41-35--76), and Samford's Kelly Stout (38-38) all are tied for fifth place after one round.
Southern Miss' Ashlea Deener (39-39--78) is tied for 12th place, and East Tennessee State's Alysa Few recorded the shot of the tournament, when she aced the 110-yard, par-3 17th hole at Shadow Ridge. She finished at 39-39--78.
The 2003 Lady Eagle Invitational is the final regular-season tournament of the spring for Southern Miss. The Lady Eagles will next play in the Conference USA Championship in Lake Jovita, Fla., April 19-21. The league tournament is being hosted by South Florida.
