Lady Eagle Basketball Team Holds Annual Awards Banquet
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball squad held its annual postseason awards banquet Tuesday night in the M-Club Room located on the campus, and seniors Dana Jones and Jessica Woods claimed two of the top awards.
Jones took home the Most Outstanding Player honor, leading the team in scoring (11.4) and second in rebounding (5.5). Jones also received the best defensive player award and field goal percentage award.
Woods earned the team's Coaches' Award, which is given to the player who excels on and off the court. The fifth-year senior completed her degree and was working on a master?s degree. Woods, who sat out the 2001-02 because of a season-ending injury suffered in preseason, averaged 6.1 points and 4.4 rebounds. She finished her career ranked in the top 25 in several statistical categories including scoring, rebounding, steals, field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted and minutes played.
Other Lady Eagle award winners included Allison Story, who received the team's award for best free throw percentage and most improved player. Marlena Lee also the award for most improved player in addition to the assist award.
Junior Tierra Lassiter received a statistical award for best three-point field goal percentage, while La?Tasha Sumerall received the award for most steals. Sonja Brown received awards for the highest rebound average and the most blocked shots.
The Lady Eagles return only five letterwinners for the 2003-04 season and the addition of redshirts Courtney Todaro, Ebony Jenkins and Denise Wilson.
