Baseball Announces Third Signee of Spring Period
"I am happy that Mike has decided to attend Southern Miss" Palmer said. "He has a chance to possibly pitch early in his career for us. If he continues to work hard, he should keep getting better and better. He throws three pitches for strikes, has an outstanding breaking ball and uses his slider as his outpitch."
Cashion, a three-year letterwinner as a pitcher and outfielder, helped Clinton High School to a 25-8 record as a senior this past season and a second-round appearance in the state playoffs. He was 5-1 with a 3.41 ERA as a senior and struck out 53, while only walking nine. He hit .344 with 10 doubles, three home runs and 28 RBIs. For his career, he posted a 15-8 record with a 3.21 ERA. He struck out 185 and walked 43. He also hit .325 with 12 home runs over his career.
Cashion was named to the 2003 Mississippi High School Athletic Association Public School 4A/5A all-star game and was the gold medal winner at the state games of Mississippi in 2002. He also was a three-year letterwinner in football as a quarterback. An all-region selection, he was a team captain and named the team's best offensive back. He also was named to Who's Who Among National High School Athletes and the National Honor Society.
This marks the third signee of the spring signing period and sixth overall. The Golden Eagles signed Brett Hoeflich (1B/OF, Petal HS/Petal, Miss.) and Trey Cuevas (C/Oak Grove HS/Oak Grove, Miss.) during the spring signing period, and Barry Bowden (RHP/Vidalia HS/Vidalia, La.), Patrick Ezell (P/Petal HS/Petal, Miss.) and Nathan Sanders (OF/Meridian CC/Meridian, Miss.) in the fall signing period.
Southern Miss is currently 34-11 overall and 17-4 in Conference USA action, good enough for first place in the standings. The Golden Eagles are ranked No. 19 in Baseball America, No. 20 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Poll, No. 21 in Collegiate Baseball and No. 25 in USA Today/Baseball Weekly Coaches Poll.
