Lady Eagle Golfers Are 7th At C-USA Tournament
DADE CITY, Fla. -- Southern Miss opened the Conference USA Women's Golf Tournament at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club here, Monday, with a 321 team total and is in seventh place in the nine-team, 54-hole event.
TCU leads the tournament after one round with a 304 team total, three shots better than South Florida and four shots in front of Tulane. Memphis finished in fifth place at 312, and Louisville is sixth at 317. UAB (328) is in eighth place, and Cincinnati (347) is ninth.
Ofelia Lopez did her part for Head Coach Julie Gallup and the Lady Eagles by shooting an opening round, 2-over-par 35-39--74, a score that has her in second place, behind only TCU's Brooke Tull, who shot an opening 36-36--72. Southern Miss also put one other player in the top 20. Natasha Vincent finished at 38-40--78 and in a tie for 18th.
Other Lady Eagles and their first-round scores include Jennifer Keefe in 35th place at 45-39--84, Ashlea Deener in a tie for 36th place at 44-41--85 and Brena Quaranto in 42nd place at 41-47--88.
Following Tull and Lopez, UAB's Brooke Mangan (39-36--75), TCU's DRae Ward (36-39--75) and Tulane's Carolin Landman (42-33--75) are tied for third place and another group of six players is a stroke back.
The second round of the tournament will be played Tuesday, and the final round Wednesday. For the first in C-USA history, both men's and women's tournaments are being played on the same days, at the same site.
