Baseball Announces First Signee of Spring Period
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Trey Cuevas, a 5-11, 190-pound catcher from Oak Grove High School in Oak Grove, Miss., to a national letter of intent for the 2003-04 academic year.
"Trey hits the ball well and does a good job behind the plate," Palmer said. "He is a tough-nosed competitor, which is a trait that I like in a catcher. If he continues to work hard, he will have a bright future with our baseball program here at Southern Miss. We've been fortunate to sign a lot of local players over the past several years, and they have been an integral part of our program as we strive to win Conference USA this year and participate in the NCAA Tournament."
Cuevas is currently hitting .477 with four doubles, six home runs and 21 RBIs for Oak Grove, which begins its quest for the Mississippi state baseball championship tomorrow night. He has already been selected as a member of the Mississippi High School Coaches Association's All-Star Team, which will play its annual North-South game at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in June.
This marks the first signee of the spring signing period and fourth overall. The Golden Eagles signed Barry Bowden (RHP/Vidalia HS/Vidalia, La.), Patrick Ezell (P/Petal HS/Petal, Miss.) and Nathan Sanders (OF/Meridian CC/Meridian, Miss.) in the fall signing period.
Southern Miss is currently 27-10 overall and 11-4 in Conference USA action, good enough for first place in the standings. The Golden Eagles are ranked No. 22 in Baseball America, No. 23 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Poll, No. 27 in Collegiate Baseball and No. 30 in USA Today/Baseball Weekly Coaches Poll. Southern Miss also is ranked No. 21 on CollegeBaseballInsider.com's composite rankings.
