Baseball Travels To Louisville For Weekend C-USA Series
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team travels to Louisville, Ky., for a Conference USA weekend series on Fri., Mar. 21 - Sun., Mar. 23, at Cardinal Stadium (33,000) against the Louisville Cardinals. Friday's game begins at 2 p.m. and Saturday's and Sunday's games will start at Noon.
All three games will be broadcast on 107.1 - FM, The Zoo, in Hattiesburg and SouthernMiss.com. Lance PIttman will handle the play-by-play duties for the weekend.
Southern Miss (15-5, 3-0 Conference USA) enter's the weekend series after dropping a 7-2 decision against South Alabama on Tuesday. The loss broke a six-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles, including a Conference USA opening-series sweep over Saint Louis at Pete Taylor Park. Louisville (12-5, 2-1 Conference USA) comes into the weekend series after winning two-of-three at Memphis last weekend. The Cardinals dropped Friday's game, 3-2, before winning Saturday's game, 10-7, and Sunday's game, 10-0.
This marks the 54th meeting between the two schools. Even though the Golden Eagles lost 2-of-3 games at home against Louisville last season, Southern Miss holds an 36-17 advantage in a series that began in 1976.
Southern Miss' Anthony Dewitt (Jr., RHP) will pitchi in Friday's game against Louisville's Zach Jackson (LHP). Dewitt is 3-1 with a 2.00 ERA in 27.0 innings pitched. He has struck out 21, only walked four and opponents are batting .220 against him. In his last outing, he pitched eight innings, gave up one run on five hits, walked one and struck out six in Southern Miss' 13-1 win over Saint Louis. Jackson (So., LHP) is 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 35.0 innings pitched. He has 29 strikeouts and eight walks and opponents are hitting .231 against him. In his last outing, he pitched 8.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out eight, while earning a no decision.
Saturday's game will feature Southern Miss' Bob McCrory (Jr., RHP) against Louisville's Scott Barber (Sr., RHP). McCrory is 4-0 with a 6.46 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 17 and walked 11 batters. In his last outing against Saint Louis, he picked up his fourth win of the season, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up four walks, walking five and striking out six. Barber is 5-0 with a 0.77 ERA in 35.0 innings pitched. He has struck out 39, walked eight and has allowed opponents to hit .164 against him. In his last outing against Memphis last Sunday, he pitched a complete-game two-hitter, while striking out 11 and walking four in Louisville's 10-0 win at Memphis.
Southern Miss' Stephen Castleman (Sr., RHP) will throw against a Louisville pitcher to be announced later. He is 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 30.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 30 and walked 12. In his last outing, he picked up his third win of the season, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up one earned run on five hits, walking three and striking out eight.
