Baseball Defeats Temple, 23-9
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Jarrett Hoffpauir went 4-for-6, hit two homers and drove in five runs, and Jeff Cook finished 4-for-6 for the game with a homer and drove in three runs to lead Southern Miss to a 23-9 victory over Temple University, tonight, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. This marked the second game this season that a Southern Miss player has had two homers in a game.
Southern Miss scored 23 runs on 22 hits and committed three errors, while Temple scored nine runs on 11 hits. The Golden Eagles scored 12 runs in the first inning, seven in the third inning, one in the fifth inning and three in the seventh inning. Seventeen batters came to the plate in the first inning, and 11 batters came to the plate in the third inning. Temple scored two in the first inning, three in the third, two in the fourth and one each in the seventh and ninth innings.
Bob McCrory picked up his third win of the season, pitching two innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits, walking one and striking out three. Daniel Best came on in relief in the third inning, pitching four innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits, walking one and striking out four. Brian Hurley came on in relief in the seventh inning, pitching two innings, giving up two runs, walking six and striking out four. Austin Tubb pitched the final inning, striking out one batter.
The Golden Eagles pounded out three doubles, one triple and four home runs, while the Owls finished with two doubles and one home run.
Clint King finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a homer and drove in four runs, and Matt Shepherd was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, a triple and drove in three runs. Carlos Velasquez, Brad Willcutt and Adam Smith each finished with two hits. Velasquez, Smith and Beau Griffin each had two RBIs.
Temple was led by Rob Cucinotta, who finished 4-for-4 with a double, and drove in four runs. John Quigley finished with two hits, a double, a homer and drove in four runs. Jeff Roma went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.
Owls' starting pitcher Bryan Stamm didn't retire a batter and gave up six runs on two hits and walked three. Tim Foulkrod gave up five runs on four hits, walked five and struck out one. Chris Hamilton pitched 2.1 innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out one. Eric Filson came on in relief in the third inning, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out five. Tim Andrel pitched the final two innings, giving up one walk and striking out one.
