Off The Tee, Day Three, at The Beau Chene Intercollegiate
Day 3, the 36-hole day, February 24, 2003
As we stepped out of the van this morning we were glad to see the driving range was finally open. It has been closed since we got here because it was too wet to hit balls.
There was a shotgun start so naturally every team was on the range and it was very crowded. There were spots for each team to have two players hitting balls at one time.
They stuck us on the very end of the tee box and almost right behind a big oak tree. So we hit a few big hook shots around the tree and we were ready to go.
We teed off on another perfect day for golf. It was about 78 degrees and partly cloudy with almost no wind. You have to take advantage of days like today, and we did. We fired an eight-under-par 280 the first round, and came right back with a three-under-par 285 the second round.
Justin Elliott broke his first round slump with a 69 and then followed it up with a 73. Shane Rushing, coming off the win at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate, shot seven-under for two rounds. I played solid as well, and we played great as a team.
As we made it back to the hotel, Coach Johnson congratulated us on our solid play. He reminded us of the importance of focusing on playing well tomorrow as well.
The van ride back to the hotel took a long time as we dodged Mardi Gras. We forgot about the huge party that goes on all over Louisiana during our all-day golf marathon. Traffic was ridiculous, but Coach Johnson navigated well as we eased our way back to the hotel where pizza and a shower awaited our arrival.
Tomorrow is an important day, and we need to play well to finally win on the road. We trail by 2 shots going into Tuesday. It is going to take a low score to win this tournament, if the conditions are the same tomorrow. Tomorrow could be our day to take it deep!
