Southern Miss Lady Eagles Play Last Home Game, Host Houston
HATTIESBURG, Miss. --- Southern Miss concludes its home portion of its schedule, hosting Houston, Sunday afternoon. The Lady Eagles, losers of their last two, are looking to get back on track. Southern Miss will honor its six seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
Southern Miss is coming off a 69-63 loss to TUC, Friday night. In that game, Allison Story led the Eagles with 16 points, her fifth straight game in double-figures, La'Tasha Sumerall scored 11 points and Marlena Lee chipped in 10 points.
Dana Jones, who has led the team in scoring all season, continues to do averaging 10.4 points. Sonja Brown leads the team in rebounding at 6.8 rebounds. Lee leads the team in assists with 83.
The Lady Eagles are averaging 59.7 points and 39.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 66.1 percent from the free throw line.
Following today's game, Southern Miss will conclude its regular season on the road, visiting Charlotte (Feb. 28) and East Carolina (Mar. 2).
Houston is 12, 3-8, following a 65-62 loss at Tulane, Friday night. In that game, Chandi Jones scored a game-high 32 points, her 12th 30-plus game this season, and Shondra Bush added 12 points. Kiemona Harris pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Houston is averaging 72.4 points per game and 37.0 rebounds, while shooting 39.7 percent from the field and 64.0 percent from the line. Head Coach Joe Curl, in his fifth season, returned 11 letterwinners, including four starters from last year's team that advanced to the championship game of the NWIT.
Southern Miss and Houston have played 11 times in a series that dates back to the 1992-93 season, before both teams joined Conference USA. Southern Miss leads, 6-5. The Lady Eagles won five of the first six meetings between the two teams, but Houston has won four of the last five games, including the last three.
Both teams continue to battle five other teams in Conference USA for one of the remaining five spots in the 2003 C-USA Tournament, Mar. 6-9, in Memphis, Tenn.
