Day 1, travel day, February 22, 2003
After a few set backs and a little lecture from Coach Johnson, we were finally on our way again to the great state of Louisiana. This week we travel to Mandeville where the aftermath of yesterday?s cold front has drowned our hopes of playing something other than ?mud golf.? I guess we are used to it now, since we played in the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate at Hattiesburg CC after torrential downpours.
This week the featured fivesome is Shane Rushing, Matt Wofford, Justin Elliott, Mike Soroka, and I. After playing well last week, we look forward to taking our game on the road once again. Matt Wofford is playing in his second tournament this spring after a strong showing at our home tournament.
Southern Miss has done well at this tournament in the past. The team visited the winner?s circle, in 1993. Golden Eagle legends Rob Stock, Stuart Brown, Voyed Couey, Todd Metz, and Carl Phillips made up the team that brought home the trophy that year. They were under the direction of Coach Sam Hall. This week we hope to do the same as our great alumni.
After playing in the mud for nine holes, we decided that we would get plenty of preparation during tomorrow?s practice round and that it was time to go to the hotel. Coach Johnson took us to a great seafood restaurant called Mortan?s. It was really good, and I recommend the raw oysters. It was great seafood, and nothing beats a little ice cream to finish off the meal.
Tomorrow is the practice round where we will map out the course for the next few days. Deciding our strategies and honing our swings is the task for tomorrow in order for us to be ready for competition. We are all excited and playing well, so it should be a good showing for the Golden Eagles this week.
