Southern Miss Lady Eagle Netters Edge Samford, 4-3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Southern Miss won for the third time in as many matches, defeating Samford, 4-3, in tennis action Tuesday afternoon. Southern Miss upped its record to 3-2, while Samford dropped to 1-2.
Southern Miss took the doubles? points, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Kathi Sadofsky and Jennifer Sibille (USM) defeated Lisa Stertzer and Jenny Walls (SU), 8-1. Courtney Ulrich and Amanda McClure (USM) defeated Jen Pharr and Jamie Aid (SU), 8-1. Emily Nunnally and Katie Crawford (SU) defeated Nikhila Narra and Emily Foster (USM), 8-2.
?I am pleased with the way we stayed in and finished strong,? Head Coach Randy Rowley said. ?I was disappointed we didn?t play well as a team. A couple of the matches got off to a sluggish start, but we finished strong.?
The Lady Eagles got wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles. McClure defeated Santa Cruz in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Emily Foster followed with a straight win at No. 3, defeating Stertzer, 6-2, 6-1. Sadofsky clinched the match with her win at No. 2 singles, after being down one set, defeated Crawford, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Samford?s Nunnally defeated Narra in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Jen Pharr (SU) defeated Olivia Berry in a marathon match, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4). Samford?s Jenny Walls got the win after winning the first set, 7-5, when Sibille could not finish the second set with a sprained ankle.
Southern Miss returns to action, Feb. 19, against UAB at 2 p.m.
