Baseball Travels To UNO For Tuesday Night Matchup
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team, currently on a two-game winning streak, will look to extend its streak when it travels to New Orleans on Tues., Feb. 18, to face UNO at Privateer Park (4,200) at 6:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) won two-of-three games in their season-opening series with McNeese State this past weekend. The Cowboys won Friday's game, 4-2, and Southern Miss came from behind to win games two and three, each in the bottom of the ninth, 7-6, and 8-7, respectively.
UNO (2-4) dropped two-of-three games in its series at Louisiana-Monore this past weekend. The Privateers won Friday's game, 5-1, before losing Saturday's game 8-4, and the finale on Sunday, 3-1.
This will mark the 79th meeting between the two schools with UNO leading the series, 45-33. Last season, both teams won at its respective homes, as the Privateers won the first meeting, 10-8, and Southern Miss won the second game, 13-2.
Southern Miss will send junior right hander Anthony Dewitt (0-0) to the mound to face junior college transfer Chris Bourgeois (1-0). Dewitt finished the 2002 season with a 1-4 record with a 6.08 ERA in 26.2 innings pitched. He struck out 15 and walked nine. Bourgeois has made two appearances this season and is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 4.2 innings pitched. He struck out seven and walked one.
Redshirt sophomore outfielder Clint King leads the Golden Eagles with a .462 batting average, recording a double, a homer and driving in six RBIs. He has an on-base percentage of .462 and a slugging percentage of .769. Redshirt sophomore catcher Brad Willcutt and junior outfielder Carlos Velasquez each are hitting .333. Willcutt has a double, and Velasquez has driven in a run. Sophomore second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir is hitting .273 and drove in the winning run in the second game of the McNeese State series.
Relief pitchers junior college transfer Ray Antonelli, freshman Noah Tritz, redshirt sophomore John Nicholas and junior college transfer Austin Tubb all had outstanding showings this past weekend. Antonelli came on in relief in game one and pitched the final 4.0 innings, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out five. Tritz pitched 3.1 innings of relief in game two, giving up one unearned run on one hits, walking two and striking out one. Nicholas earned his first collegiate victory, pitching the final 4.0 innings of game three, giving up one run on three hits, walking two and striking out three. Tubb finished game two, pitching the final 1.2 innings, giving up one walk and striking out two.
Sophomore infielder Chris Adams leads the Privateers with a .476 batting average in six games this season. He has two doubles and has driven in four runs. He has been walked seven times and only struck out twice. Senior outfielder Brad Domrels is hitting .292 with a double, a homer and one RBI and has stolen two bases. Sophomore Creighton transfer Joe Pietro is hitting .600 with a double in 10 plate appearances.
Sophomore LSU transfer J.P. Martinez leads the pitching staff with a 1-0 record and a 0.96 ERA in 9.1 innings pitched. He has given up one run on four hits, walked six and struck out seven. Junior college transfer Michael Jones is 0-0 with a 4.35 ERA in 8.0 innings pitched. He has given up five runs on 11 hits, walking two and striking out eight.
