Golden Eagle Men Open Season With 79-67 Victory
Three other Southern Miss players posted double-digit points. Jason Forte had 13 points. Clement Carter added 12, and Greg Johnson had 10.
DeAndre Jones had a game-high 21 points, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range for the Braves.
?I thought we had some great peaks in the game,? Southern Miss Head Coach James Green said. ?Our guys came out and played with great effort.?
The Golden Eagles (1-0) opened with a 43-32 lead at the break, but Alcorn (0-1) battled back with two quick runs ? 9-2 and 6-0 ? to pull to within two points, 51-49, at the 13:33 mark.
Southern Miss countered, though, with a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to pull away for good, 65-53.
?You have to give Alcorn a lot of credit because they did a nice job and hit a lot of baskets to stay in the game,? Green said. ?But we responded. We made plays when they made plays, and we will only get better.?
The Braves would pull no closer than seven points for the remainder of the game.
Charles Gaines led the Golden Eagles with 10 rebounds, and Jasper Johnson added nine.
Alcorn?s Myles Howard had a game-high 11 rebounds and also had 14 points.
Southern Miss shot 59 percent from the floor in the opening half. Jasper Johnson scored 14 of his 18 points in the first, on 6-of-7 shooting.

Southern Miss stays at home for a Nov. 25 game against Texas Southern. It will be another doubleheader, with the Lady Eagles playing at 5:30 p.m., and the men's game starting at 8 p.m. Following that game, Southern Miss hits the road for four games, starting with a Nov. 29 game at Murray State.
