Lady Eagles Open Conference Play With Home Matches
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Off to a school-record start through 18 matches, the Southern Miss Lady Eagle volleyball team hopes to carry over that success with its first action in Conference USA.
Southern Miss (15-3, 0-0 in C-USA) hosts a pair of matches this weekend at the USM Payne Center. The Lady Eagles take on Houston (4-10) on Friday before battling TCU (14-4) on Sunday. The matches are set for 7 p.m., each day.
Under the direction of third-year Head Coach Santiago Restrepo, the Lady Eagles have had the best non-conference start in school history. The Lady Eagles' record through 18 matches also tops previous marks of 13-5 in 2002 and 11-7 in 1990.
Last week, Southern Miss split a pair of matches in the Southern Miss Tri-Match. The team defeated Alcorn State, 3-0, before falling to Tulane, 3-1, in a non-conference contest.
The team's three seniors -- Andrea Bush, Bridget Files and Nicki Tribble -- have been leading the charge for Southern Miss. Files and Tribble lead the team with 310 points each. Tribble is tops on the team in kills (260) and service aces (33). Files follows with 234 kills and also leads the team in digs (190) and total blocks (81). Bush has scored 242.5 points this year, including 210 kills.
Junior setter Amy Truong has picked up 737 set assists this season and is tied with Files for second in service aces (26).
Kelly McAnelly leads the Cougars, who are 2-2 in their last four matches. McAnelly has 217 kills and 164 digs this year. Cinthia Piva is second on the team with 159 kills.
TCU, winners of four the last five matches, feature a balanced attack led by Ellen Rehme and Dominika Szabo. Rehme has a team-best 271.5 points with 228 kills, and Szabo has 267.5 points and 231 kills.
