Southern Miss falls to Saint Louis, 2-0
ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis blanked Southern Miss 2-0 tonight in a Conference USA women's soccer match at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Billiken sophomore forward Jamie Perry and freshman midfielder Christy Cigno combined on both goals to support keeper Meghann Burke's fourth shutout of the season.
After absorbing some early Golden Eagles pressure with Burke making three saves, Saint Louis jumped on top in the 23rd minute on Perry's sixth goal of the year. After Cigno tracked down Tressa Pecher's long ball, Cigno sent a centering pass to Perry who drilled a 10-yard shot over the outstretched hands of Golden Eagle keeper Leslie Schoeplein.
Cigno's bid to build on the one-goal margin was snuffed out by Schoeplein in the 51st minute. After a pretty through ball from senior midfielder Jenny Kehl, Cigno was in on the USM keeper one-on-one but Schoeplein snagged Cigno's 10-yarder.
The Billikens turned up the heat in the last 20 minutes, and Cigno netted the insurance marker at
74:03 with her fourth goal of the year. Freshman forward Lachlyne Eastman tracked down a long
ball at the right side of the Southern Miss penalty area and dropped a pass to the top of the area for Perry, who promptly sent a cross to the far post. Cigno skied high for the header from four yards.
Saint Louis outshot the Eagles (5-4-0, 1-2-0) 11-5 and had a 6-2 edge in corners. USM's Schoeplein
made five saves, while Burke had three stops for the Bills.
Southern Miss travels to Marquette on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m.
