Southern Miss Travels to Face Saint Louis, Marquette
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss soccer team enters the second weekend of Conference USA play as it travels to face Saint Louis and Marquette.
The Lady Eagles (5-3, 1-1 in C-USA) take on the host Billikens (5-3, 1-1) at 7 p.m., Friday, in St. Louis, Mo. The team then travels to Milwaukee, Wis., to face Marquette (6-2) in Sunday's 1 p.m. match.
Southern Miss is coming off its 1-1 weekend in conference play, as it lost to Cincinnati, 2-0, in the league opener and then defeated DePaul, 1-0, on Sunday. In the DePaul match, senior forward Katie Adams netted the team's lone goal, while junior keeper Leslie Schoeplein had a career-high 11 saves in goal.
Adams leads the Lady Eagles with 13 points on the year, including six goals. Sophomore midfielder Katie Randolph follows with seven points, and senior forward Lindsay Canham is third with six points. Schoeplein has a team-high 33 saves and a 1.14 goals-against-average.
Saint Louis comes off a 4-2 loss to UAB on Sunday. Prior to that match, the Billikens dropped Memphis, 4-0. Anny Lucier netted two goals in the win over Memphis, while Jamie Perry scored both Saint Louis goals against UAB.
Perry is tops the team with 10 points on the year, including five goals. Meghann Burke has 38 saves this season to lead the team. She also has a 0.99 goals-against-average.
The Marquette Golden Eagles open their play in the conference. Last weekend, Marquette competed in the Duke Adidas Classic where it lost to No. 1 North Carolina, 4-1, before defeating No. 15 Duke, 2-1. Goal keeper Anne Dalecky scored the lone goal against North Carolina, while Kate Gordon had a goal and an assist against Duke.
Gordon has a team-high 12 points on the year, including four goals and four assists. Ashleigh Koenig anchors the defense with 29 saves and a 1.32 goals-against-average this season.
After the matches, the Lady Eagles continue their road swing, as they face Louisiana-Lafayette at 4 p.m. on Friday, and then meet South Alabama at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
