Eagle Linksmen Finish Fifth at Carolina Tournament
FLORENCE, S.C. -- The Southern Miss men's golf team finished fifth (291-287-296 -- 874) at the Carolina First Intercollegiate Tournament at The Country Club of South Carolina. The Eagles ranked second after yesterday's two-round performance but fell three placements in the team final standings.
East Carolina moved up from a tie for fourth place yesterday to winning the 18th-annual tournament, shooting a team score of 295-285-290 -- 870. Tourney-host Francis Marion finished second (290-288-293 -- 871), and UNC Wilmington (293-287-292 -- 872) and Old Dominion (289-286-297) shared third place.
Justin Emil improved from 11th place to third place in the individual final standings, shooting 72-72-68 -- 212 (-4). He followed South Alabama's Ryan Gildersleeve who set a tournament record with a nine-under-par 207 and claimed medalist honors. Frederik Ohlsson of Francis Marion shot 71-68-71 to finish in second place.
Justin Elliot, who claimed a -2 performance and a share of seventh place yesterday, finished tied for 22nd with 73-69-77 -- 219. Michael Soroka shot 73-73-75 -- 221 and tied for 31st. Ben Snow carded 73-73-76 -- 222 and tied for 34th, and Shane Rushing tied for 52nd with 74-75-77 -- 226.
Southern Miss will play next in the Hillman Robbins Memorial at Big Creek Golf Club in Memphis, Tenn., on Sept 29-Oct. 1.
