Cincinnati Soccer Holds on to Defeat Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Cincinnati netted one goal in each half and held on to defeat Southern Miss, 2-0, in the Conference USA opening match for both teams, Friday, at the USM Track and Soccer Complex.
The Lady Eagles dropped to 4-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in C-USA play, while the Bearcats, ranked No. 25 in the Soccer Times Top 25 Poll, improved to 5-2-0 and 1-0-0.
After inclement weather halted the start of the second half for 60 minutes, the teams resumed play and were able to play the full 90 minutes before darkness set in.
The Bearcats opened the scoring as Lisa Stephens netted a goal off an assist by Amy Mink past Southern Miss keeper Leslie Schoeplein in the 35th minute.
In the 78th minute, Cincinnati upped it score to 2-0, as Lauren Buland converted on an assist by Rachel Leiberman.
After Southern Miss led in shots taken, 9-8, in the first half, the Bearcats outshot the hosts 6-4 in the second half.
Both Schoeplein and Cincinnati keeper Tracy Hale finished with five saves each.
The Lady Eagles return to action as they host DePaul on Sunday. Kickoff for the match is set for 1 p.m.
