Southern Miss Soccer Blanks Gardner-Webb, 3-0
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss scored two goals in the second half and came up big on defense as it shut out Gardner-Webb, 3-0, Sunday, at the USM Track and Soccer Complex.
Sophomore midfielder Katie Randolph netted two goals and junior goal keeper Leslie Schoeplein had eight saves to the lead the Lady Eagles (4-2) to its fourth-straight win this season. Gardner-Webb fell to 3-3 with the loss.
The shutout was Southern Miss' first of the year, after the team allowed eight goals in the previous five matches.
The Lady Eagles opened the scoring the first half, as sophomore Emily Anne Chenoweth's corner kick bounced off a Bulldog defender and into the back of the net, putting the hosts up, 1-0, in the 25th minute of play.
The score would not change for the remainder of the half, as Schoeplein and Gardner-Webb keeper Edie Herring came up with five and four saves, respectively.
Just as the two teams were to take the field to start the second half, lightning in the vicinity caused a 30-minute rain delay.
After the delay, however, Southern Miss came out gunning. After a seven shot first half, the Lady Eagles fired off nine shots in the second half, six of which were on goal.
In the 62nd minute, senior midfielder Leila McReynolds fired a shot that hit the post, and Randolph took the rebound and shot it past Herring for her first goal of the match. Randolph later scored off a header after freshman defender Micah Stephens served the ball from a corner kick.
The Lady Eagles outshot the Bulldogs, 16-11, and had 11 shots-on-goal.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend, as it hosts Conference USA opponents Cincinnati and DePaul in the opening weekend of conference play. The Lady Eagles and the Bearcats kick off at 4 p.m. on Friday.
