Southern Miss Soccer Opens Home Slate Against Gardner-Webb
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? After playing five matches on the road, the Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team opens home play with a match against Gardner-Webb on Sunday.
The match is part of the second annual Golden Eagle Soccer Classic, which also includes Alabama A&M. Jackson State, which was supposed to compete against Southern Miss on Saturday, will not participate in the tournament.
The event will feature two matches -- Alabama A&M vs. Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 2 p.m., and Southern Miss vs. Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m., on Sunday.
The Lady Eagles (3-2) enter Sunday's match on a three-match win streak. Southern Miss defeated Alabama A&M, 7-1, last Sunday and dropped Middle Tennessee, 2-1, last Friday. Gardner-Webb (2-2) enters the tournament after dropping a 1-0 decision to Liberty on Tuesday.
Senior forward Katie Adams, who has scored in all but one match this season, leads the Lady Eagles, scoring 11 points on the season. With five goals, Adams needs just one more goal to match her season-high, set last year. Senior forward Lindsay Canham follows with six points, on two goals and two assists.
Kim O'Brien leads the Bulldogs with 14 points this season, all of which came in two matches. O'Brien currently ranks second on Gardner-Webb's all-time scoring list.
Following this weekend's match, Southern Miss remains at home as it hosts Cincinnati, Friday, in the C-USA opener for both teams. The Lady Eagles then face DePaul on Sunday.
