Lady Eagles Lead Nicholls State Tournament
BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team, playing its first tournament of the fall season, shot a 321 team-total over the tough Bridges Golf Course here Thursday to take a 12-stroke lead after one round of play in the Lady Colonel Collegiate Tournament, being sponsored by Nicholls State.
The second and final round is scheduled for Friday morning.
Head Coach Julie Gallup saw all five of her players finish in the top 10, led by Natasha Vincent, with a 37-41--78, good for a two-shot lead over teammate Brena Quaranto and two other players who finished with 80s. Quaranto shot 41-39--80. The Lady Eagles' Jennifer Keith ended the day in fifth place at 40-41--81, Ofelia Lopez in a tie for sixth at 40-42--82, and Ashlea Deener in a tie for ninth at 37-46--83.
Troy State is in second place in the eight-team field at 333, and UNO (336), South Alabama (344), and Nicholls State (346) round out the top five teams.
South Alabama's Angela Villa and Troy State's Tracy Tidwell are tied with Quaranto in second place, at 80, two players are tied with Lopez in sixth place, and five others are tied with Deener in ninth place.
