Auburn Blanks Southern Miss, 3-0, in Exhibition Match
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ? The Auburn Lady Tigers scored three goals in the first half and held on to defeat Southern Miss, 3-0, in a lightning-shortened match, Saturday, in the Huntsville College Preseason Classic.
The teams battled it out in a 40-minute first half, but the second half of the match was called after 15 minutes due to lightning.
Sarah Steinmann, Jenny Zarzour and Jessica Allen all netted goals for Auburn, which out-shot the Lady Eagles, 6-4. The Lady Tigers also had a 5-1 shots-on-goal advantage.
"Our forwards and midfielders played well in the match," Southern Miss Head Coach Matt Clark said. "But we are still unsettled in the defensive positions. We have to find the right player in the back and get our goal keeper situation straightened out."
Southern Miss opens regular-season play against Georgia State, Friday, in the Ole Miss Soccer Classic in Oxford, Miss. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. The Lady Eagles then face Marshall on the following Sunday.
