HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Women?s Basketball Coach Rick Reeves has announced the hiring of Angela Atterberry-Jackson as Assistant Women?s Basketball Coach at the University of Southern Mississippi. She will begin her duties effective July 1, 2002, contingent on approval from the IHL Board.
Atterberry-Jackson, a former Lady Eagle, was a four-year letterwinner and starter from 1997-2000. She ranks in the top 10 in 10 career statistical categories. She finished her career averaging 11.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. During her career, she was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team and was a second team all-conference selection as a senior. She was named a Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen honorable mention and Street & Smith's honorable mention All-American.
"We're very excited to have Angela join the Southern Miss Women's Basketball staff as an Assistant Coach," Reeves said. "It's nice to have a former player to not only sell our program but also the university as well. She has spent time in the WNBA, and can give our players insight about what it takes to advance to the next level. She loves this University, has a great amount of loyalty to the women's basketball program and to me, and also is willing to work hard and learn. She will become a very good coach."
Prior to joining the Southern Miss staff, Atterberry-Jackson was a teacher and coach at Dixie Attendance Center for one year. She also trained with WNBA teams Cleveland Rockers and Portland Fire during the offseason before returning to Hattiesburg.
"I'm excited about the opportunity of returning to Southern Miss as a member of the women's basektball staff," Atterberry-Jackson said. "Working for Coach Reeves and at Southern Miss is a great opportunity for me to learn more about the game of basketball as a coach and to further advance my career. Being a former player at Southern Miss and now returning as an assistant coach is special to me. I look forward to the challenge."
