Golden Eagle Trio Named First Team All-Conference
KINSTON, N.C. - Three Southern Miss players were selected as First Team All-Conference USA members when the conference announced its baseball awards at the 2002 C-USA Baseball Tournament at Kinston, N.C.
Senior third baseman Allen Winningham, junior pitcher Shea Douglas and junior outfielder Jeff Cook were named to the league's first-team, as selected by a panel consisting of each team's head coach and sports information director and a media representative from each city.
Only regular-season champion Houston had more players named to the first team with five selections. Following Southern Miss, Cincinnati and Tulane had two honorees, and East Carolina, Louisville, Saint Louis and TCU had one selection each.
Cook, Douglas and Winningham headlined a group of eight Golden Eagles garnering all-league honors. Sophomore pitcher Bob McCrory was named Second Team All-Conference USA, while Jarrett Hoffpauir, Cliff Russum, Matt Shepherd and Brad Willcutt were chosen to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.
Tulane's James Jurries was named the C-USA Player of the Year, while Houston's Brad Sullivan was chosen as the Pitcher of the Year. East Carolina's Darryl Lawhorn earned Freshman of the Year honors, and Louisville's Lelo Prado was named Coach of the Year.
Cook, who was a preseason all-conference selection and a second-team honoree last year, leads Southern Miss in a number of batting categories, including runs (65), hits (77), home runs (14), total bases (132) and RBIs (61).
Douglas, a second team selection in 2001, is the No. 1 starter for the Golden Eagles this season. He became the first Southern Miss pitcher to win 10 games in a season since 1991 and has season-highs in both wins (10) and strikeouts (103). During the regular season, Douglas finished with a 2.88 ERA, allowing 35 runs, 30 earned, on 83 hits in 93.2 innings.
Before going down with an injury during the Memphis series, Winningham was one of the most-productive hitters on the team. He still leads the team in batting average (.366) and is tied for second in hits (67) and has 34 RBIs. Winningham is tied for the team lead in doubles (19) and has the most extra base hits this season (27). This is Winningham's first all-conference honor.
McCrory was the lone Golden Eagle on the second team. He finished the regular season as the team leader in ERA (2.49) and had the second-most wins (6). McCrory was third on the team in strikeouts (57).
Southern Miss also led all teams with four selections on the all-freshman team.
