Golden Eagle Baseball Travels To
Southeastern Louisiana On Wednesday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team (26-15) travels to Hammond, La., to face Southeastern Louisiana University (16-23) for a mid-week game at Alumni Field (3,000) on Wed., April 24, at 6 p.m.
The games will be broadcast on 107 FM, The Zoo, in Hattiesburg, and on www.SouthernMiss.com for fans outside the Hattiesburg area. Lance Pittman will handle the play-by-play duties with the pregame show, beginning 15 minutes prior to the first pitch.
Under the direction of Corky Palmer, Southern Miss is 4-3 against SLU, 1-2 in Hattiesburg and 3-1 in Hammond, La., and overall, the Golden Eagles own a 62-42 series advantage against the Lions. This year marks the 105th meeting between the two schools. The Golden Eagles defeated the Lions, 6-4, in Hattiesburg, on April 9.
The Golden Eagles finished last week with a 2-2 record, winning a weekday game against Mississippi State on Wednesday and defeated Saint Louis on Saturday. Southern Miss also dropped a game to each Mississippi State and Saint Louis.
The Lions come into Wednesday's game after dropping a three-game conference weekend series to Lamar, 6-1, on Friday, 9-1 on Saturday and 10-0 on Sunday. Southeastern Louisiana has lost five in a row and 11 of the last 13 games.
Southern Miss will send Daniel Stewart on the mound on Wednesday. Stewart is 3-2 with a 4.37 ERA in 57.2 innings, striking out 43 and walking only 11. In his last outing, he pitched a complete-game four hitter. He gave up three runs, two earned,on four hits, two walks and struck out one.
Jeff Cook continues to lead the Golden Eagles in hitting, posting a .357 batting average. He has six doubles, one triple, 11 homers, 44 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Allen Winningham is hitting .352 with a team-leading 15 doubles, one triple, seven homers, 29 RBIs and a team-leading 15 hit by pitch. Griff Israel is hitting .323 with nine doubles, one triple, three homers and 30 RBIs.
The Lions' probable pitcher will be Mack Lambert, who is 1-1 with a 3.91 ERA in 23.0 innings of work. He has struck out 15 and walked eight and opponents are hitting .307 against him.
Southeastern Louisiana is led by Russell Taylor, who is hitting .329 with nine doubles, seven homers, 26 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Anthony Krajancic is second on the team, hitting .327 with 12 doubles, eight homers, 34 RBIs and seven stolen bases.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a three-game Conference USA weekend series with UAB. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m., Saturday's at 2 p.m., and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
