Stewart, Golden Eagles Double-Up Bulldogs, 6-3
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Senior pitcher Daniel Stewart threw his first complete game of the season, and only the second of his career, as Southern Miss defeated visiting Mississippi State, 6-3, Wednesday, at Pete Taylor Park.
The win came off the heels of a three-game losing skid, one that included a 19-2 loss to the Bulldogs on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles improved to 25-14 overall, while Mississippi State fell to 22-13-1.
After giving up two early runs in the second inning, Stewart (3-2) settled down and allowed just one hit and three base runners over the final seven frames. The senior right hander gave up three runs, two earned, on just four hits in the game. He also had one strikeout.
"This was a big win for us," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "After last night's game, I didn't think that we have played well at all since we came home. We needed to get this win, and it didn't matter who against. Daniel Stewart pitched a great game on the mound, and he has really done well that last few times out."
The Bulldogs opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. After Brent Lewis and Steve Gendron reached on consecutive hits, Michael Brown brought the runners home with a two-run single up the middle, giving Mississippi State the 2-0 lead.
Southern Miss cut the deficit to one on a solo home run by Clint King in the fifth inning.
Mississippi State pushed its lead back to two runs, plating a run in the top of the sixth inning. Chad Henry scored as Lewis singled up the middle for the team's third run of the game
However, a four-run sixth inning gave the Golden Eagles the go-ahead lead, and all but shut the door on the Bulldogs. In the inning, Allen Winningham led off with a double to left field, and Jeff Cook drew a walk to put the first two runners on. One out later, Griff Israel reached on a base on balls, loading the bases. Clint Stoy then doubled to center field, scoring Winningham and Cook to tie the score. Southern Miss went ahead as King grounded out to second base, scoring Israel in the process. Stoy then scored on a wild pitch by Bulldog reliever Saunders Ramsey, ending the scoring for the inning.
The Golden Eagles tacked on its final run of the game on Cook's RBI-single through the right side, scoring Carlos Velasquez. With the hit, Cook extended his season-high hitting streak to 17 games.
Stoy and King led Southern Miss with two RBIs each, while five different players registered a hit.
Lewis had two hits to lead Mississippi State. Starter Ryan Carroll allowed one run on two hits in 4.2 innings on the mound. Reliever Chris Young (4-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Brian Owens, Ramsey, Steven Dowe and Robby Goodson all saw action for the Bulldogs, combining for one run on one hit in 2.2 innings on the mound.
The Golden Eagles embark on a seven-game road swing, beginning with a three-game, Conference USA series at Saint Louis. The opening game of the series is set for 7 p.m., Friday. Saturday and Sunday games will both be played at 1 p.m.
