Lady Eagles Finish A Solid 3rd in Snowbird Tournament
TAMPA, Fla. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team put together rounds of 307 and 311 for a 618 total, good enough for third place in the 16th Annual Snowbird Intercollegiate, and just a shot out of second place. The tournament is hosted annually by Northern Illinois University. Twenty-two teams took part in this year's tournament.
The Lady Eagles' first round 307 was good enough for second place after the opening round, but USM slipped to 311 in the second and final round to fall one shot behind Notre Dame. Arkansas State shot 305-295--600 to claim first place for the third straight year. The Lady Indians' second round 295 was a tournament record as was their 600 two-round total.
Arkansas State's Shellie Wenzel shot rounds of 71 and 68 for a 139 total and earned medalist honors in the event. Her 68, and a 68 by Southern Illinois' Alison Hiller, both tied the tournament's single-round record set by Liz Early of Central Florida, in 1992.
For Southern Miss, Jennifer Keith shot rounds of 76-74--150 (six over par), to finish 5th and lead the Lady Eagles. Ofelia Lopez shot 77-77-154, Natasha Vincent 75-84--159, Ashlea Deener 79-80--159, and Brena Quaranto 79-80--159.
The Lady Eagles will play next in South Florida's Waterlefe Invitational in Bradenton, Fla., March 18-19.
