Southern Miss Inks Second Baseball Recruit Of Early Signing Period
"I am excited that Barry has decided to come to Southern Miss," Palmer said. "He is an outstanding pitcher who has a chance to compete and see time on our pitching staff right away. He has a very loose arm and displays excellent control. He throws three pitches for strikes with his curve ball being his out pitch."
Bowden, the 2002 Louisiana Class 2A Player of the Year, finished his junior season with a 16-1 record with a 1.74 ERA in 80.1 innings pitched. He struck out 147 batters, while walking only 16.
Bowden plays for Coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir, who is the father of current Golden Eagle second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir and former Southern Miss standout and current member of the Baltimore Orioles organization, Josh Hoffpauir.
Bowden is an all-state honoree and a two-time All-Parish selection, helping lead Vidalia to the district championship last season. He played summer baseball for the Tri-Parish All-Stars for the past four years, helping them to the state championship runner-up the past two years.
Bowden is the son of Lynn and Kathy Bowden. He chose Southern Miss over Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
