Eagles Scrimmage After Global Sports Fails To Show
Hattiesburg, Miss. -- Southern Miss' second and final exhibition game of the season turned into an intrasquad scrimmage here Tuesday night after the Global Sports team failed to show. The Black team posted an 89-81 decision in the scrimmage.
Global lost in overtime at UNO Monday night, and Southern Miss officials, even after the Tuesday night scrimmage, had not been able to determine why the touring team did not appear for the game.
"Certainly it's a disappointment for us," said Head Coach James Green. "We had planned to use this game as an indicator of where we were as a team, and what we needed to concentrate on in the practices between now the our regular season opener. Global certainly had the team to provide that test. We've seen results from the games they played prior to tonight, and they've been competitive against some good competition, and even beat LSU a few nights ago.
"We did scrimmage, and, overall, I think it was a solid effort, under adverse conditions, in that we had almost no players to sub, and there was, I think, a letdown on the players' part when it was determined that we weren't going to play. But, we'll use this scrimmage in a positive way, and work even harder to get ready for the regular season."
In tonight's scrimmage, the Black team put five players in double figures, led by Charles Gaines, who had a game-high 23 points. Jasper Johnson added 18, Ben Lambert 16, Jason Forte 13 and James Pattman, Jr., 12. For the white team, which led 45-43 at the half, Geoffrey Brown led the way with 21 points, while Clement Carter added 18, Greg Johnson 16 and David Haywood 11.
Following tonight's game, Green's team will have 10 days to get ready for the season-opener, at home against Alcorn State. The Eagles also will host Jackson State (Nov. 25), Troy State (Nov. 27), and South Alabama (Nov. 30) before the month is over.
