Eagles Host Global Sports Tuesday
Hattiesburg, Miss. -- Southern Miss wraps up its exhibition season Tuesday night against the touring Global Sports team. The Golden Eagles beat Spirit Express 104-77 in their opening exhibition game. In 21 exhibition games prior to the upcoming Global game, Southern Miss is 18-3, Green-coached teams 11-2.
Global Sports is in the midst of a 10-game, 19-day tour that already has shown positive results for the team. After losing its opening game at Auburn (90-70), Global Sports beat Middle Tennessee State (80-73), beat LSU (78-69) and is playing at UNO tonight.
Following the Tuesday game, Global Sports will play at Tulane, Nov. 14, and then end their tour with games at Old Dominion, Miami, Virginia Tech and Charlotte.
Global Sports' roster shows two former Ole Miss players, Jason Harrison and Rahim Lockhart, one from Delta State (Tim Pledger) and three from Cincinnati (Damon Flint, Antwan Jones and Erik Martin).
Through the team's first three games, Jones has led the visitors in scoring with 38 total points, including 17 each against Auburn and LSU; Harrison had 32 points, including 13 against Auburn; and Flint has accounted for 30 points, including 20 against Auburn.
In the Eagles' opener, five players scored in double figures, with senior guard Mario Myles leading the way with 20 points. Forward/guard Jasper Johnson added 18, guard/forward Clement Carter 15, forward Greg Johnson 12 and forward Charles Gaines 10. Southern Miss hit 41-of-74 (.554) field goals, and 8-of-19 (.421) from three-point range.
The Eagles picked up 47 rebounds in the opener, led by Myles' eight and Gaines' and Johnson's seven each.
Following tonight's game, Head Coach James Green's team will have 10 days to get ready for the season-opener, at home against Alcorn State. The Eagles also will host Jackson State (Nov. 25), Troy State (Nov. 27), and South Alabama (Nov. 30) before the month is over.
