Southern Miss, Tulane Duel to a 1-1 Draw
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? It took two overtimes to finish the match, but in the end, neither Southern Miss nor Tulane could break free from a 1-1 score as the two Conference USA teams dueled to the draw, Sunday, at the USM Track and Soccer Complex.
The tie is Southern Miss' first of the season, as well as the first under third-year head coach Matt Clark. The Lady Eagles record moved to 6-8-1 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play. Tulane's record now stands at 5-9-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the conference.
The Lady Green Wave jumped out to the early lead as Colleen Lake took Jacque Gruber's corner kick and found the back of the net, making the score 1-0 in the 20th minute.
The score would remain over the remainder of the half, as both Southern Miss keeper Leslie Schoeplein and Tulane keeper Megan Morey combined for nine saves in the half.
While the Lady Green Wave scored relatively early in the match, the Lady Eagles' luck was not as fortunate. It wasn't until the 82nd minute of regulation that a Southern Miss shot finally landed, as Lauren Prewitt scored from 15 yards out off an assist by Katie Randolph.
After regulation, both teams fought it out for the two 10-minute overtime periods, but neither team could do enough in the end to break the tie.
The two teams combined for 51 shots on the day, as the Lady Eagles had the 28-23 shot advantage. Senior forward Katie Adams led Southern Miss with 10 shots, three of which were on goal.
Schoeplein finished with a game-high 10 saves, falling just shy of her career-high of 11 saves. Schoeplein now has 71 saves on the year, the third-best single-season performance in Southern Miss history. Morey had nine saves in the contest.
The teams also combined on 39 fouls in the match, as Tulane finished with the 22-17 advantage in that category.
The Lady Eagles have two matches remaining in the regular season -- both of which are on the road. The team travels to face South Florida next week. Kickoff for the match is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
