Southern Miss Soccer Falls in Overtime, 3-2
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss and Houston drew to a 2-2 tie after regulation, but the visiting Cougars needed just three minutes in the first overtime period to defeat the Lady Eagles, 3-2, Sunday at the USM Track and Soccer Complex.
Houston's Kelly Golden scored the decisive goal in the 94th minute as she controlled a ball that got past Southern Miss keeper Anna Snyder and fired it into the empty net.
The Lady Eagles fell to 6-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in Conference USA play, while Houston improved to 6-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in conference.
Southern Miss opened the scoring in the ninth minute of play, as senior forward Tricia Wiles converted on an assist by Katie Randolph to give Southern Miss the 1-0 lead.
Houston countered just five minutes later, as Sarah Hemster took an assist by Anne Gasser to knot the score, 1-1.
The score remained until the second half when Nicole Aubuchon netted her goal in the 58th minute of play, giving Houston the 2-1 advantage.
The Lady Eagles did not score until the 73rd minute, when sophomore defender Amanda Nadolski fired a shot from 20 yards out and through the hands of Houston keeper Erin Ferguson.
The two teams exchanged shots for the remainder of the half, setting the scene for the overtime gamewinner by Golden.
Both squads were even with 17 shots apiece, while Houston had the shots-on-goal advantage, 10-6.
Snyder finished with seven saves in the match, while Ferguson had four.
Southern Miss remains at home for the final two home matches of the season, as it hosts Memphis on Friday and Tulane the following Sunday.
